Ontario Debt Clock Tour Wraps Up at Queen's Park

Author: Candice Malcolm 2013/09/03

TORONTO, ON: The Canadian Taxpayers Federation (CTF) concluded its Debt Clock Tour of Ontario on Wednesday at Queen’s Park. The 28-day tour visited 56 communities across Ontario and travelled over 4,000 kilometers.

“People across the province are fed up with the way our tax dollars are being spent and wasted,” said Malcolm. “We are here at Queen’s Park to relay the message resonating from taxpayers across Ontario: stop running deficits, stop growing the debt and stop wasting our money.”

“During the course of our tour, Ontario’s debt grew by $900,832,876.71,” said Malcolm. “This unsustainable level of spending and borrowing must stop.”

In 2013, Ontario’s debt grows by:

· $371 per second, or about the average Ontario family’s monthly grocery bill;

· $22,260 per minute, or about the cost of a down payment for a starter home in our province;

· $1.34 million per hour, or enough to hire five new doctors or 20 nurses;

· $32.1 million per day, enough to build a brand new hospital or upgrade a highway in our province.

“We are calling on Premier Wynne to take action and address this debt,” said Malcolm. “We cannot keep on this reckless path and hand our debt off to future generations of taxpayers. It’s simply unfair, and not the way Ontario taxpayers want their government to be run.”
